17 helpful tips to maximize your iphone, ipod, or ipad's battery life

It is never convenient to run out of batteries in the middle of using your electronic devices. In fact, the thought of being unable to use a cell phone for even an hour might send some of us tech junkies into a sort of panic. It’s even worse when you actually have the thing in your hand but can’t make it work because you forgot to charge it before you left the house and can’t plug it in!

Here is a series of tips you can use to extend battery life for your Apple iPhone, iPod, or iPad and help you stay out of the red! If you ever find yourself in dire circumstances running out of juice without a way to charge your device, you can employ all of the following for absolute maximum battery conservation. Otherwise, you can pick and choose and make changes as necessary to suit your needs.

Use any of the following as required to extend your iPhone, iPad, or iPod’s battery life!

    1. Deactivate Bluetooth Function. When bluetooth is activated, it uses power to search for available devices. When not needed, turn off Bluetooth by going to Settings>General>Bluetooth
    2. Turn off Push Mail, or Fetch New Data Less Often. For maximum battery conservation, turn off Push Mail completely by going to Settings>Mail>Fetch New Data. You may also choose to leave it turned on but change the frequency, such as fetching new mail hourly instead of every 15 minutes.
    3. Turn off Notifications. Allowing applications to send you Push Notifications uses battery life. Turn off Notifications by going to Settings>Notifications.
    4. Adjust Sound Settings. When possible, you may choose to turn off Sounds, including alarms, alerts for new mail, sent mail, or voicemail, etc. Turn off unnecessary Sounds by going to Settings>Sounds.
    5. Deactivate Vibrate. The vibrate function uses a lot of power in games and ringtones. When possible, it is best to turn this option off. You can turn off Vibrate by going to Settings>Sounds.
    6. Disable Wi-Fi. When not in use, it is best to turn off Wi-Fi to preserve battery power. Constantly searching for available networks uses up battery life. Turn off Wi-Fi by going to Settings>Wi-Fi.
    7. Do Not Join Networks. Continuously scouting for available networks consumes a lot of power. If your Wi-Fi setting is left on, you may still turn off ‘Ask to Join Networks’ under Settings>Wi-Fi.
    8. Turn off Location Services. When not necessary, disable Location Services by going to Settings>Location Services. This function consumes a lot of power. Remember you will need to turn this back on to be able to use any map or GPS-based applications. You may also choose to turn off specific apps’ access to location services. These options are available on the same screen as the general Location Services settings.
    9. Adjust Screen Brightness. Lower the Screen Brightness setting and conserve your battery power by going to Settings>Brightness.
    10. Disable 3G. When you don’t need the speed of 3G, turn it off. It uses more energy when used for downloading data. Turn off 3G by going to Settings>General>Network.
    11. Shut down apps running in the background when not needed to save iphone battery lifeExit Apps before Locking your Device. All open apps run in the background when your iPhone, iPad, or iPod is locked. When inside an app, press the home button (the round button with the square icon inside it just under the bottom of the screen) to exit. Press the Sleep/Wake button to lock your device. With the new iPhone software those apps will remain active and running in the background even after you press the button. To deactivate any apps that aren’t currently needed, press the home button twice quickly to bring up all open apps. They will appear in a new bar across the bottom.  Hold your finger on any of the app icons to activate the disable function, and when they start to wiggle a red minus sign will appear on each. Touch the minus symbol on all apps you don’t currently need and this will stop them from running in the background and save battery life. Click the home button once more to deactivate this mode and once again to return to the home screen.


  1. Keep your Device at ideal Temperature. Ideal temperature range is between 32˚F and 95˚F (0-35˚C). Exposing your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to extreme temperatures reduces the battery life and may damage your device. It is also suggested that you remove any protective case or cover when charging for long periods of time.
  2. Update OS Software.  Download the most recent software update for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod from the iTunes Store. Software updates may often improve your device’s battery performance.
  3. Decrease Volume. Turning down the volume on your device will help conserve battery power while listening to music.

Turn it off by going to Settings>Music>EQ (on the iPod) or Settings>iPod>EQ (on the iPhone and iPad) to help save battery power.
  5. Turn on the Auto Lock Function. Set your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to lock immediately when not in use to save battery life. Turn on Auto-Lock and set to 1 minute by going to Settings>General>Auto Lock.
  6. Calibrate your Battery once a month. Another valuable trick for getting more life from your electronic gadgets is by calibrating them about once a month. This process works for all devices with rechargeable batteries: cell phones, smart phones, laptops, mp3 players, etc. All you have to do is let your battery run completely down so that it turns itself off, and then charge it all the way back up to 100%. This ‘resets’ the battery meter, which can lose track of the lowest and highest levels if they are not often reached. For example, if you always charge your battery when it reaches the first low battery warning (at 20%), then the battery meter starts to recognize 20% as the lowest level for your battery and uses that as the new ‘zero’ which causes the calibration to get out of whack.
